The Application of SAMBA in IP surveillance
In the past , many people transferred or exchanged data on the network by a famous protocol – FTP (File Transfer Protocol). However, FTP was usually not allowed users to modify the files on the server directly, which brought many inconveniences to users. Therefore, new network file system was developed – NFS (Network File System) and CIFS (Common Internet File System, also known as SMB), but there came another problem: At the beginning, NFS could only run on Unix system, while CFIS could only run on Windows system. To solve this problem, SAMBA came out.
Briefly speaking, SAMBA is a software re-implement from CIFS protocol, it allows files sharing between computers running Windows and computers running Unix. Zavio is the first professional IP Camera manufacturer that tries to apply this technic into IP camera, but what benefits does SAMBA bring?
1.More convenient:
Being built-in the IP camera, SAMBA, which can replace alarm sending and periodical functions, works like the “Network
Neighborhood” we’re using in Windows. Therefore, users no longer need to record video by a NVR.
2.No limitation between different systems:
Samba can be used in both Windows and Unix systems (such as Linux), while most of the NVR can only be used in Windows
system.
3. Longer time for video recording:
Before, once anything triggered motion/audio detection set up by users, the IP Camera would automatically start recording
videos in the flash, and send it out via FTP or SMTP. However, due to the flash storage is limited, the IP Camera cannot record
videos over than 5 seconds, but most of the times 5 seconds is not enough to let users know what is happening. On the other
hand, since SAMBA connects the system before recording videos, it can record 60 seconds at most(In H.264/MPEG-4 format),
which is 12 times more than FTP/SMTP!
